Monthly Discussion: AI in Archives

Monthly Discussion: AI in Archives

Date: April 23, 2026
Location: Zoom

Joseph Carriger, Senior Manager of Digital Initiatives at Gilcrease Museum, led a great discussion with a group of 16 members. The discussion emphasized that AI is already embedded in archival and museum work, but it should be seen as a tool that handles volume while humans remain responsible for meaning, context, and interpretation. Participants agreed that fears of job displacement are overstated, though there is concern that leadership may overestimate AI’s ability to replace archivists, whose work with primary sources and nuanced description cannot be automated. Key challenges include misidentification, ethical responsibility, legal ownership, sustainability of data centers, and the need to clearly label AI-generated content while protecting intellectual property. Overall, the group stressed that AI’s use is unavoidable, so the focus should be on thoughtful, transparent implementation, ongoing human contribution, and balancing accessibility with high-quality archival standards. Thank you, Joseph, for a great discussion!
