A Beginner’s Guide to Digital Preservation

Tuesday, June 15, 1:00pm-4:00pm

Instructors:

Winnie Schwaid-Lindner, Digital Preservation Librarian, Louisiana State University.

Vincent Barraza, Digital Preservation Librarian, Xavier University.

Description: Digital preservation is different for every institution, every collection, and even every individual. Nobody knows an archivist’s collection better than they do, and everyone brings different skills to the table. It’s vital that each archivist feels capable and empowered to make their own decisions regarding the preservation of their digital materials, regardless of skill-set and background.

Developed and led by two Louisiana-based Digital Preservation Librarians, this is a participatory workshop intended for digital preservation newcomers. It does NOT focus on technical skills or software solutions, but instead demonstrates digital preservation concepts in a way that’s broadly applicable for all people, institutions, and collections. Whether an attendee is a lone arranger, a student, or someone who simply hasn’t had any experience with digital preservation, attendees will walk away with increased competence and confidence in knowing how to approach the preservation of digital materials, including how to determine risk factors and priorities based around their own collections, and where to look for assistance if they feel out of their depth.

This is a 3-hour long participatory workshop centered around group discussions, with a cap of 25 attendees.

Requirements for workshop attendance:

·  Willingness and ability to participate!

·  Computer and internet access

·  Microphone and camera

Cost of this workshop is $25 for OAA members/$30 for non-members. Registration scholarships are generously offered by the Oklahoma Department of Libraries and the Oklahoma Historical Records Advisory Board, with funding support from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, and are first come, first serve. Registering for the workshop will serve as an application for an attendance scholarship.
